Lindstrom, officially spelled Lindström, is a city in Chisago County, Minnesota, United States, located 35 miles northeast of the Twin Cities. The population was 4,442 at the 2010 census. Lindström’s motto is America’s Little Sweden. U.S. Highway 8 serves as a main route for the community. The ö in the city’s name is derived from the Swedish language.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 3.69 square miles (9.56 km), of which, 3.60 square miles (9.32 km) is land and 0.09 square miles (0.23 km) is water.
Lindström is located 10 miles from the Wisconsin state line, and less than two hours from cities including Duluth, St. Cloud, and the Twin Cities area. When looking at the town from above, it looks like it could be an island due to the surrounding lakes. The land mass of Lindstrom consist mainly of lakes (including South Lindstrom Lake, North Lindstrom Lake, Green Lake). With so many lakes, Lindstrom is a great destination for fishers from all over the world.
As of the census of 2010, there were 4,442 people, 1,774 households, and 1,265 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,233.9 inhabitants per square mile (476.4/km). There were 1,943 housing units at an average density of 539.7 per square mile (208.4/km). The racial makeup of the city was 97.0% White, 0.4% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.6% Asian, 0.3% from other races, and 1.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 1,774 households of which 34.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.9% were married couples living together, 9.9% had a female householder with no husband present, 4.6% had a male householder with no wife present, and 28.7% were non-families. 23.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 2.96.
The median age in the city was 39.1 years. 25.8% of residents were under the age of 18; 5.6% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 26.7% were from 25 to 44; 25.5% were from 45 to 64; and 16.2% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the city was 49.9% male and 50.1% female.
As of the census of 2000, there were 3,015 people, 1,225 households, and 855 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,332.1 people per square mile (515.1/km²). There were 1,322 housing units at an average density of 584.1 per square mile (225.9/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 97.61% White, 0.20% African American, 0.36% Native American, 0.50% Asian, 0.56% from other races, and 0.76% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.13% of the population. 25.1% were of German, 22.8% Swedish, 12.8% Norwegian, 7.9% French and 6.3% Irish ancestry according to Census 2000. 100.0% spoke English as their first language.
There were 1,225 households out of which 31.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.4% were married couples living together, 8.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.2% were non-families. 25.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 13.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.46 and the average family size was 2.95.
In the city, the population was spread out with 26.0% under the age of 18, 6.8% from 18 to 24, 26.5% from 25 to 44, 22.5% from 45 to 64, and 18.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 95.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.7 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $44,980, and the median income for a family was $50,519. Males had a median income of $42,604 versus $28,163 for females. The per capita income for the city was $21,195. About 5.7% of families and 8.0% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.6% of those under age 18 and 13.9% of those age 65 or over.
